Castle Crag, a striking little fell in the heart of Borrowdale, and one of the most distinctive landmarks in the Lake District, which used to be the site of an ancient Iron Age hill fort.

This abstract photo shows the iconic shape of Castle Crag in it's autumnal coat.

What is interesting that many people don't realise and that the more well known grander Lake District fells don't have is the woodland around Castle Crag in Borrowdale is one of the best surviving examples of what much of the Lake District would have looked like hundreds of years ago, and it’s unfortunately a rare thing in the Lake District nowadays.

The area’s ancient oak and birch woods are remnants of the original “Atlantic rainforest” that once covered large parts of western Britain. These woodlands have remained largely undisturbed for centuries, allowing a rich ecosystem to flourish.

The trees are draped with mosses, ferns, and rare lichens that depend on the clean, humid air typical of Borrowdale, some of which can only be found in Borrowdale in England. Walking through Castle Crag’s woodland gives you a glimpse into a wilder, older landscape — a living snapshot of how the Lake District’s valleys might have appeared before widespread deforestation and farming changed the scene.
